Pachelbel's Canon

Pachelbel's Canon (also known as the Canon in D) was written by Johann Pachelbel. The canon was originally scored for three violins and basso continuo and was probably paired with a Gigue in the same key. Neither the date nor the circumstances of its composition are known, although it has been suggested that it was wirtten sometime between 1680 and 1706.

It remained in obscurity for centuries and it was not until the 1960s, when it was discovered and recorded that the work became more widely known. Since then it has become one of the most popular pieces for weddings and other landmark ceremonies.
